Stowmarket areas

Hi,

I wonder if anyone here lives in Stowmarket and could please give me some advise.

We are planning to move to the area and we are looking for a nice place near primary and secondary schools.

We looked for a house in the east side of Stowmarket, near the big tesco but I had a very bad impression. Is that a council estate ?

Can anyone please advise of good areas for families near or around stowmarket ?

Thank you

How close do you need to be to Stowmarket. Is it a town lifestyle you need, or would you consider the local villages as an option?

The estate near the Tesco is called Cedars, it’s a massive sprawl of overlooking houses that keeps on getting bigger as they’ve added more phases. The earlier houses are starting to look a bit shabby now, which means it’s probably going to go downhill. There’s a newer estate to the west of the town, which is much newer, but of the same type of arrangement. In fact, there’s new houses springing up all over the place as every bit of land is built on- Stowmarket and Stowupland (which is adjacent, just on the other side of the A14) are both designated areas for housing growth under the council’s development plan. Of course, this has affected the quality of school, GP and dentist provision etc.

Happy to answer any questions or offer some suggestions, if you aren’t tied to the town itself.

Hi, thank you so much for your comments.
Yes, I did realised that that cedars area are a bit rough and so many houses together. I don't fancy living like this, I am much more of a quiet calm person and so is all my family. Ideas I would like to have at least 1 corner shop near home where myself or the kids could walk to but for all the rest we can drive. I do like to be a bit isolated . My biggest worry about isolated places is just for my youngest, when starts secondary school, because he will probably need to get a bus.
I love shopping and I am aware that I will need to drive to Bury St Edmunds or elsewhere to do it, so that's not so much of a problem.
Mainly schools, neighbours and not a packed village is what I am looking for.

Thank you so much

Stowmarket is just a bit bland, to be honest. Why can't you live in Bury? It's only 14 miles away, and is much nicer.

I can and I prefer actually, but there's not too many houses that I liked there at the moment :(

Have a look for village outside of Bury, or closer to Sudbury. I'm not a fan of Stow either. Wouldn't live there myself. I don't think there is much there either to be honest.

If you want to live somewhere a bit quieter, but not too remote from the A14, and with good schools, I’d recommend you look at Debenham or somewhere near. It’s a nice little village, with a co-op, local butchers etc. Other places to look at near Stowmarket are Mendlesham, Elmswell (though that’s also turned into one big building plot in recent times), and Old Newton. Generally in the area, south of the A14 house prices are a bit higher, so you get a bit less for your money (Stowmarket excepted).

I've heard a lot of people saying that :(

I will go for a drive this weekend and to look at some properties to get the feeling of Stow.

But is good to know which neighbourhood to avoid to start with.

Thank you

Great, I will bear these in mind on my search.

Sorry, forgot to mention, Debenham High School has a very good reputation locally, and is rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Butternutscotch · 16/03/2023 23:49

I will have a look at Debenhams then
Thank you for all your advises
