Huntingdon-what’s it like?

We will need to downsize from the South East due to health reasons …

What is Huntingdon like as a place to live?
We like traditional looking towns with some traditional housing, with good amenities including a cinema and a safe friendly vibe.

We’d spend £500k tops for a 3 bed detached. Are we dreaming?

Hitchin is super expensive though!

You can just about afford a three bed detached in Cambridge, I'd move there. Or Ely.

Huntingdon- no way, I grew up 20 mins from there and it was the Oxmoor estate that had a reputation for being rough.

St.Ives is pretty, but pretty dead tbh. And it's a bugger for flooding.

St Neots feels bigger because its essentially a town and two villages which have merged

You lot are a hive of information. Hitchin, Letchworth, all those places are v expensive! They are the sort of thing I’m aiming at though. I might look
again at St Neots.

This thread is really informative thank you all so much! Quite a few places I’d not considered.

so the village vs town thing:
I like walking or cycling to local places not driving all the time, just to see a friend or pick something up from the local shop. The smaller mix of people can be a bit unappealing in a village in my experience.

If they weren’t so noisy I would live in a city ideally! I like a lot going on!

Sounds like it really would be worth looking at Bury St Eds then. We moved here last summer and walk to places 95% of the time. Always lots happening too.

@OddBoots i love Bury SE but I’ve realised that Cambridge is about as far East as we’d like to go…

Ah, that makes sense, I hope you find your own ideal place.

@goants maybe have a look at Thrapston - small market town on the West Cambs/Northants border. It's got a pretty little high street with independent shops, all the normal amenities - dentist, vet, leisure centre, Co-op etc - a Saturday market once a month and is just off the A14 for easy transport links to elsewhere. Nice riverside walks on the Nene. Affordable houses too. That might tick a few boxes?

Thank you @PrayForMyBum

St Neots
or look at Bourne in Lincolnshire. Maybe too small for you.

St Neots is nice, Bedford is pretty run down, Huntingdon also run down. St Ives okay but boring. St Neots has a more mixed age demographic, loads of lovely parks and is easily commutable to Cambridge by bus or London by train. It's basically full of London expats. Which means it's creative and quite dynamic!
