Hi!
Can anyone tell me what Histon is like?
Does it have a good reputation?
If someone says they live in Histon, what do you think?

Are there any bits of it to avoid buying in?
What are the people there like?
Thanks :-)

It seems very friendly and has very active facebook pages. - worth joining them and asking your questions. Try 'HI People' and 'Histon and Impington'

Bloody expensive!

marionara · 22/02/2022 22:21

@bbtatoes

Bloody expensive!
Thanks, it seems so indeed! Is it expensive due to its proximity to the city? Or for some other reason? Is it seen as fancy or something? Thanks!

Nice village, good schools, cycling distance to Cambridge (or bus every 20 minutes), big (so most facilities available in the village). Prices fall as you get further from Cambridge, and it's only just across the A14.

Thanks for this. Is it a bit rough at all? Being so close to the city? Just want to know how its perceived really, what it's culture is like. :-)

It's not rough, it's pretty middle class. I don't think there are really any rough parts.

There's a couple of nice pubs and cafes.

If you want to know the bad things about it go on Facebook and join the histon HI moaning page Grin

CambridgeLightBlue · 15/03/2022 13:56

It's a nice village but friends who have lived there found it really cliquey. One friend moved when her daughter was in year 4 and 7 years later they still feel like they are outsiders. A couple of families I know moved to other villages because they found it cliquey and that people had a very high opinion of themselves and their village.

I've never left there so I don't know how other people have found it but I think there are more welcoming villages.

Is there any particular reason you're looking at Histon?

I don't know about Histon but my BIL lives just along the road in Cottenham and loves it. It seems like a friendly village and his boys enjoyed growing up there.

Twizbe · 15/03/2022 14:19

I went to sixth form with a few people who lived there.

It seemed nice.

maslinpan · 15/03/2022 14:21

It has a fantastic butchers shop.

I live in the Impington bit. It's mostly extremely middle class, but very friendly. There are cliques but there are cliques everywhere and as the villages have got larger it is less so. It's pretty community minded, there are a few well used fb groups. There's quite a transient population what with university staff, American airbase folks and science park employees. It has some good pubs, good cafe, a library, a superb butchers and if you're planning to open a grocers we would be extremely pleased as many of us have been bereft since Les Ward upped sticks. Some nice playgrounds, some really lovely countryside walks, a good gym, really fab schools and a fun and friendly cycling club for the inevitable Mumsnet hobbying husbands (should you have one). It's 20 mins by bicycle to the city centre, I use my car rarely. Everything I want to do is pretty close by.

I was lucky to get priced out of Cambridge when I decided to move here. I love it and plan to stay forever.

My Cambridge city dweller perspective on Histon is that it is, essentially, a distant suburb. Housing is often quite modern, communications and transport a bit iffy (guided bus good, other bus routes slow). The big draw is the schools and - way back pre comprehensive schools (aka 1973) - excellence. Comberton will do same and provide actual village setting at same kind of distance from Cambridge

I was actually born in Histon and lived there until I was 11. Nowadays, if I ever visit it does feel horribly cliquey and really not very nice. I've lived in smaller villagers which were much less snotty but a lot nicer. It might as well be Cambridge for the house prices too!
