Thoughts on moving to Didcot?

Would love some info / opinions on Didcot, the good, the bad and the ugly.. I'm considering buying a house there and have my eye on one but really the only great thing about it seems to be the train station for getting to Reading or Oxford..I've been living in Crawley, near Gatwick for 10 years and I found it a bit dull, with no where close by with buzz except Brighton but 30 minutes on the motorway or on a train always felt like a mission! I'm going Didcot won't be more of the same?

I don't know much about didcot but if you're looking for somewhere with a buzz, didcot doesn't exactly spring to mind...

If you live in Crawley, surely central London isn't too far away for a buzz?

It's 45 mins minimum to Victoria and 1.5 hours door to door io get into central. That's a 3 hour round trip for a night out.

I was thinking it's only 12 mins on train to Reading or Oxford though?

We lived in Didcot for 3 years. Nice big houses, good schools. A bit soulless - big estates etc, but you get a decent amount of house for your money and the station is very convenient if you want to travel somewhere more interesting!

If what appeals to you is its proximity to Oxford or reading why not live in either of those cities instead? (Perhaps compromising on the size of house).

I really don't want to live somewhere small house-wise, it's one of the highest priorities on my list. I'd probably rarely go to Reading, it's just handy for work and Oxford is known for being crazy crazy expensive. Witney is reasonably priced, about 15 mins out but no train station so you'd have to drive in. I hear it's also extremely congested so if I did have to be in an office 1-2 days a week that might prove challenging. Also I know there's buses into the Center, but I'm not a big fan of buses, I pretty much drive everywhere and I hardly drink.

I don't need to be right in the hub of everything, but I'd like to be close by, maybe a 10 minute drive. The problem with crawley was there was no where near by to go. Brighton was 30 mins and a bit too far, and everywhere else was 40 mins to an hour away.

My grandfather described Didcot as one horse town.

It's changed massively since then but I cant think of anything worth visiting in Didcot, or ten minutes away, unless you like steam trains.

You don't think Oxford is worth visiting? That's 10 mins on the train..

Yes, but it is more than a ten minute drive...
