Hi all. We’re hoping to move into the area and are interested in houses in these villages. I wondered about their relative merits. I have a 9yo DS, so I’m hoping to find somewhere he will find friends with a big field to play on and cricket and football teams etc. And for me, I’d like a community to be part of, walks and peace.

Really grateful for your advice
Thank you!

I don't know Swaffham but I have friends in Barrington and Gransden. They are both really lovely villages. Barrington is nearer to Cambridge so that might be worth bearing in mind, but Gransden is nearer to a fast route train station (St Neots) if that is important. Both Gransden and Barrington have village schools and village shops. Gransden has got a fabulous sports field and sports club, with loads going on. Barrington has a cricket club but I don't know about football.

I really like Gransden, and go there regularly. The village school is good. The secondary catchment school is in St Neots but lots of children from Gransden go to Comberton VC. My dc were at Comberton and imo it's a very good secondary school. I think Barrington feeds into Melbourn Village College, which is also good but much smaller than Comberton.

Is there a reason why you've picked those villages? Swaffham is on the North East side of Cambridge, Barrington and Gransden are West. Personally, I prefer the villages on the west and south side of Cambridge, mostly because they are in better countryside for walking. We walked at Barrington last weekend and regularly walk from Gransden. The flatness of the countryside near Swaffham doesn't appeal to me, but some people love it.

Just to add, we ended up in Barrington yesterday evening, ate in the garden of the pub which overlooks the village green where acricket match was going on. It was almost too idyllic to be true.

Hey @EmmaGrundyForPM - just wondered if you have views on Melbourne?
