Buying in York

Another plea for advice on York!
Moving up from London and looking to buy first home (so scary!). Have just been to view one which seems like a maybe, but dithering a lot!
What is Acomb like as an area? Is it family friendly? We really liked the look of West Bank Park, but a bit more concerned about schools.
As always trying to find a balance of 'sensible purchase' versus heart - is Acomb an area likely to hold value?
Would be very grateful for any advice from those who know York! Thank you :)

Depends on what you want...I wouldn’t live in Acomb but I’m not you....I’ve lived in Heworth,, bishopthorpe road area ( by rowntrees park) and Haxby.....maybe spend some time in York....get a feel for the areas

Kitkat151 - thanks so much for taking the time to respond! May I ask what puts you off Acomb? Is it a 'dodgy' area? I won't be at all offended and would really value lots of different perspectives! I think Haxby is too far out for us, as I'm not a driver so would need to be walking distance to town centre/station. But I'll definitely think more about Heworth. Thank you

We moved to York 2 years ago and found a lovely house in Acomb overlooking Acomb Green. Everyone at work told me not to buy a house in Acomb and house it was fine for first time buyers but that it was rather rough area.

Hi, thanks so much for sharing. From your name I'm guessing you opted for Clifton - would you recomend the area? At the moment Acomb seems like one of the only areas we could afford a house with a decent garden which I'd really love, but it may be there's a good reason for this (location, location!)

Yes can totally recomend Clifton Green - We live just at the top of Clifton (the Road) and our house overlooks the green. This is a different area than Clifton which has some lovely areas and some not so lovely. Its 15 minutes walk to the Minster and has some lovely houses.
