Hello! I’m completely new to Mumsnet, even though I have a 3.5yo.

I currently live in North Manchester and - to be frank - it’s quite rough. Crime is rising and while we were just a couple it didn’t bother me. But now I’m seeing teenagers knifing each other a mile from us, it’s panicking me.

Currently work in Manchester but with Covid I’ll only need to commute 2 days a week.

I need somewhere:

rural
quiet (remote is perfect)
cheap (!)
not cramped with other houses
not fancy or with particular amenities - just somewhere peaceful where I’ll feel safe for my son to be a teenager.

Ideally - Less than £400k for a 4 bed detached would be ideal. I may be dreaming, I know!

Parents are near Macclesfield so ideally not much more than 1-1.5h from there.

Any advice would be welcome! Thank you

Thanks @TheTroutofNoCraic

We’ve looked briefly at that area as Ormskirk is lovely - but parents near Macc means we would be even further from them.

Still would consider it though, so thanks 😊

Around Garswood, Newton Le Willows or Haydock might be better? All fairly rural, nice bits and in easier distance to Macclesfield.

Have you looked at anywhere in the Peak District, or Stockport? I live in Glossop atm and our 2 bed end terrace was ~£140k. I should think a 4 bed detached for £400k would be possible. I have family in Macclesfield & door to door it’s 45 minutes drive.

@paddingtonbearsmarmalade I have only really passed by Glossop - It does look lovely though.
Does it “feel” rural? I.e no dodgy teenagers hanging around?
I’ve been scarred by my (diagnosed) anxiety and the rise of crime in the suburbs.

I was persuaded to move to Glossop and was reluctant but actually have really liked it. Lots of nice pubs, a small but thriving town centre, lovely parks and obviously on the edge of the Peak District too! Obviously nowhere is 100% perfect but I feel safe here and am also quite anxious so I understand your concerns - Glossop and surrounding places of Hadfield/Dinting/Simmondley are all nice areas. It’s not really a “day out” kind of place but you could come and have a look around the parks and high street, have some food and see what you think! I gather the schools are reasonable too - my DP is a supply teacher.
