Help me find a house!

Dear all, we are looking to move to SW London/Surrey area, currently looking around Worcester Park, New Malden, Cheam, Sutton...but we have been so disappointed in what we have been able to find. Most of the houses that we have seen have dull exteriors (no bay windows, cladding) and tiny interiors (700sqft)

Do these areas have any period properties, ideally Victorian? Our current place is 1,500sqft so we'd like somewhere with at least this much floor space. Where are these properties in these areas?

Are you coming from overseas? Rightmove and Zoopla are the two big U.K. property websites. It will be much quicker and easier for you to look on there than for us to all try to explain where different pockets of different architectural periods of housing are.

FWIW, I think New Malden is the best of those areas. Nice high street, quite suburban, a comparative feeling of space (in contrast to one or two of the areas you mention), some good restaurants & still very easy to access central London.

Put in new Malden and first one that came up had bay window and not dingy inside. Not sure on square footage as in the U.K. that’s not normally advertised.

Square footage is normally advertised on the floor plan link on Rightmove.

Sometimes a breakdown of each floor, but it usually gives the overall size of the house.

No we are in London, though opposite side of SW. I have been looking on Rightmove mostly, obviously haven't been searching properly.

The only reason I mention the square footage is because the houses we have seen so far have been half the size of where we live, but the link above is much more like the sort of thing we would like. Thank you!

What's your budget? I am guessing the area you live in now is a lot cheaper than where you are moving too

Sutton is a great spot for two-bed Victorian cottages and large Edwardian houses. The in-the-middle 1500sq foot properties are rarer.

For a larger Edwardian (2000-2500sq ft+), the Landseer Conseration area is lovely and very well placed for Sutton amenities as well as Cheam Village.

Around the Highfields tennis club in South Sutton, there are a number of roads with ‘Windebanks’ (detached Edwardian, Art and Craft-y style) that tend to be 2500-4000ft in size.

Then there are some smaller clusters (but still mainly the 2000-2500sq ft+ bracket) in South and West Sutton.

Cheam and Worcester Park tend to have 30’s houses in the larger bracket.

Have you looked at Carshalton Village/Carshalton Beeches? There are at least a couple of conservation areas I can think of and you’re more likely to find the 1500-2000sq ft period properties there. The village is very pretty with 2 ponds and plenty of much older architecture. The housing stock gets younger as you head south. It’s quite a cool area with annual artists open houses, a community run theatre and lots of events etc.
