Moving to Bristol from Wales

Hi everyone. I'm new here on mumsnet and would be grateful for your advice! My hubby and I are soon to move to Bristol within the next 2 months, he has been offered a job in the Temple Meads area. We don't know the city of Bristol too well and want to find a nice, safe area to live in. We want to rent a house in a location within walking distance to a train station so that he can commute to Bristol for work. I don't drive and I have worked from home for years so I guess, for me, it would be ideal to live near a park or near some shops so that i can get out on my breaks. I also want to be, no more than 1.5 hours drive from Cardiff, I visit my elderly parents on the weekend. If you could recommend any nice areas that you know of, we would much appreciate it.

Keynsham is quite a nice, small town. It has a Waitrose, Tesco and a small high street with most things you’d need day to day. It’s on the Bath side of Bristol, with central Bristol being about a 20 min drive and Bath about 15 mins. It has its own train station and good bus links to both Bath and Bristol. It’s also on the ring road so easy for you to get to the motorway and over the bridge back to Cardiff!

what's your budget? any kids? what kind of vibe do you want from your local shops?

Newwayofthinking · 20/07/2020 00:27

I was going to say Keynsham for the above reasons too.

Depending what your budget is you could like in Totterdown / Southville, and walk to work.
Depends if you want to use the amenities though, as they are pricey areas.

I wouldn't want to drive from Keynsham to Cardiff regularly - that would be a massive chore.

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/07/2020 00:36

I was going to suggest Keynsham too. It has direct trains to Cardiff as well as Temple Meads.
There's lots of different types of housing. New estates on the Bilbie Green and Somerdale (former Cadbury chocolate factory site). Older housing close to the town centre and everything in between!

Thank you LilyE1234 and everyone else for your help. Hubby and I took a look at houses online in Keynsham, reviews look great, its ideal price wise and the distance to Bristol is perfect. I did check out some of the other suggestions but they're out of our budget. Again thank you all so much 😀

I work there, so might see you around 😁😁

Stoke Gifford.
Parkway station will get you to Temple Meads in about 10mins and Cardiff in about an hour.
Lovely area, parks, schools, very family friendly
