Berkhamsted vs. Hitchin

Hi everyone. My fiance and I are looking to move to a cute village sort of location with good links to London. We both really love Hitchin however is a bit of a drive for him (driving to Pinewood in Iver) and is more costly for my commute to London. Berkhamsted is nice as well however he is concerned it is a sleepy town vs hitchin which has loads to do. Is he right in this perception?
