Hi kel, I had my first baby at the beginning of May and am on maternity leave trying to make contact with others in the same position too. I live near you in Tottenham, and a lot of what I'm coming across is either in or near Wood Green.

There's an excellent drop-in for 0-2s and their mums on Monday afternoons at Burghley Road Under 5s Centre, a few minutes walk from Turnpike Lane tube or the shops on Wood Green High Road.

There's another mum and baby group on Friday afternoons at Downhills Park in Tottenham, but it's popular and they can only take the first 16 groups of baby and parent.

There are also breastfeeding support groups which also function as social groups, and I would recommend the one at Woodlands Park just off Green Lanes a few minutes south east of Wood Green - however, I am having to come to terms with not breastfeeding this baby (not my choice). If I do it again I'll know where to go!

All of those are free.

The NCT holds local social events and I'm planning to go to one or two in Wood Green this week or next week.

They offer postnatal courses as well as antenatal ones, and those of us on the course I did have continued to meet up since - it being a postnatal class means that we're all still off work on maternity leave, and looking to get out and meet others in the same position, whereas I didn't really feel sociable enough to have done that when I was pregnant. My course cost £60 for 6 weeks and was actually over beyond Muswell Hill towards East Finchley, but I know that there was another course that was free (with some council funding) in Wood Green - I met someone who did that one.

Presumably you will have some postnatal care and health service involvement with your baby when he or she's born, and that will be local even though your baby is being born somewhere else? Ask your health visitor about local groups/courses/activities.

My local library has posters advertising various activities.

If you'd like to meet up at a cafe, or at one of the drop ins, you're welcome to email me on elkiedee @ yahoo dot co dot uk

Welcome to Mumsnet kel

And congratulations, I hope it all goes well for you!!

(ps - don't forget to join the ante/post natal threads if you haven't already done so)

Just had a look at our listings - and unfortunately there's nothing in the N15/N17 area so far.

Elkiedee - could you possibly do an entry for the group at Downhills Park? Many thanks.

Also, I've just remembered that the Harringay Club/YMCA run a couple of baby groups. But (yet) again it's in N8.

Not long moved to Muswell Hill from the Midlands and expecting my first baby in November. Too busy working and not very organised so no antenatal classes or anything booked! Am keen to get to know any local mums or mums to be in the area - or anything about the local area.

Welcome to Haringey

Hi Zee1. I'm at the bottom of Muswell Hill.

Mercy... N8 is easily accessible from Wood Green (144, 41, W3) but I always found that most of the things that were baby/family centred were based in the East of the borough.

zee1 · 27/08/2007 13:33

Hi Marslady...

good to talk to someone here! Can you recommend anywhere I can try for antenatal classes as everywhere seems to be booked. Husband and I have no idea at this stage so really looking for something - although am tempted down the knowing nothing may be a better route!

MarsLady · 27/08/2007 14:49

Hi Zee. Email me on lovelymarslady at aol dot com

Were you hoping do join a group course?

There's an east/west divide in the borough - we have a lot of things which get Council funding in and near N15 but many of the cafes and private sector things are in Crouch End/Muswell Hill.

Zee1, which hospital are you booked into? I managed in the end to get onto a Saturday antenatal class on preparing for labour at the Whittington, 7 weeks before I was due - it was only half full 8 days beforehand and there was only one person at it more pregnant than me.

If you don't manage to find an antenatal class, I would still recommend a postnatal class - mine had the advantage that we'd all started our maternity leave so we've had more time to keep in touch since.

I live in Tottenham and had my first baby in May but regularly come to Crouch End and Muswell Hill to meet other mum and baby friends, in fact I'm over there this afternoon. You're welcome to email me elkiedee @ yahoo . co . uk if you'd like to try and meet up before or after you have your baby.
