Moving to Shrewsbury area

Hi, my husband has a new job in Shrewsbury and we are moving into the area from Manchester and wondered if anyone would recommend a good village to move to? We are visiting this week to look at houses in Bomere Heath but wondered if anyone had any recommendations of good places to live. We have 3 children at primary school too, one is Year 6 so will going to Secondary School next year. So got to consider all these things. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thank you

My BIL and his family have recently moved to Church Stretton. They are happy with the primary school and their eldest will go to the secondary next year. BIL commutes to Shrewsbury by train.

In the whole they love it and there seems to be a good amount happening there (for Shropshire).

The villages aren't great tbh, but Shrewsbury is.

Manderley7205 · 05/10/2019 18:54

Have a look at Ellesmere. Beautiful mere (lake), friendly market town and excellent primary and secondary school.

16 miles from Shrewsbury, unfortunately no train station but about half hour drive to Shrewsbury by car or there are regular buses. Nearest train station is Gobowen.

North Shropshire is cheaper house-wise than South Shropshire (Ludlow etc).

Also West Felton, Prees, Whitchurch.

I've moved to this area and absolutely love it. People smile and say hello!

Good luck with your search.

Whitchurch, prees and Nantwich are all lovely, all have a train straight to Shrewsbury

shouldreallybeasleep · 05/10/2019 18:59

Btw we moved to north Shropshire from Manchester 7 years ago. The best thing we ever did!

Thank you for the messages. My husband has got a job as a train driver so he will have to drive in or cycle most of the time. There are ideas that we hadn't considered as originally were looking at Bowbrook region but heard the places for the secondary schools were hard to get in round there. It's tricky not knowing the area at all. Thanks again for your answers. Kirsty x

Reallyshouldbesleeping, that's good to know as I was worried about moving from a big city. We are in Urmston, where did you live? x

Sorry Shouldreallybeasleep for getting your name incorrect previously. x

We lived in Ashton under Lyne Grin

Bomere Heath is a nice village. Good C of E primary and the next village along, Myddle, also has a nice primary school (although again I think C of E). Secondary wise it is in catchment for The Corbett which has really improved in recent years.

Seemstress · 05/10/2019 20:55

My in laws live in Bomere Heath, it's a lovely village, a bit quiet but that would suit me :-) Shrewsbury as a whole is lovely

Kirsty770 · 05/10/2019 22:32

Thank you for the feedback on Bomere Heath. I was starting to panic it was really bad there. We will be having a brief visit on Wednesday to view houses but won't really get to see much of the area in a quick visit. x

I don't think you will disappointed, it's a pretty, well linked village but rural enough to feel like you are living out in the sticks without it being too remote. My in laws moved up from Cornwall and bought a bungalow, the old school house from the 1900's. I'd have no problem living there at all x

Kirsty770 · 06/10/2019 15:06

Thank you Seamstress. That's reassuring. I would have liked to move to Cornwall but it's a bit too far from our families. Just hoping the children settle in and are as happy as they are at their current school. x

I lived in Shrewsbury itself and loved it. We moved for work but I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

Kirsty770 · 06/10/2019 20:18

Thank you for commenting. Which area did you live in? I was looking at Radbrook as seemed to be easier to get into the centre and good schools round there.

Radbrook is also a lovely area. The primary school is great and good chance to be in catchment for the Priory for secondary which is one of the best schools in Shrewsbury. Not as rural as Bomere Heath.
