Moving from Stevenage to Cambridge

Hi, I see this topic has been discussed before. I would really appreciate your updates on relocating to Cambridge. My husband is relocating his work to the science Park in Milton. I love Bury st Edmonds or Suffolk villages. He wants to be nearer to work and we have seen several properties within 5 miles. If anybody lives in either location I would be very grateful for your views. We don’t have a huge budget for a new house - up to 500k. Thanks

I would advise prioritising a relatively easy commute. You could go for a village on the busway route or within cycling distance (north of Cambridge). Or somewhere near a train station with trains that stop at Cambridge north (nb there don't seem to be many). I would avoid a commute by car at all costs! As the Cambridge traffic is terrible and there's neverending work on the A14 atm.

I'd live in Ely. Your DH can commute by train to Cambridge North and you get to live in a nice place. Bury isn't far at all.

On Monday morning, have a look on Google maps to see the congestion in the area. Any time from 8-9am will be ideal. Then plan where to commute from!

Histon / Impington / Milton are all cyclable.
Trains into Cambridge North are definitely recommended.
Guided busway serves some of the villages towards St Ives.

Thanks for info. I’ve done a lot of research and as my husband will have to drive due to a disability it seems like we may have to consider Northstowe. If anybody lives in the area and works at the science park info on what it’s like would be great. I’ve read some negative things about the Fens as in being isolated etc. Going for a visit again to Fulborn, Ely. Thanks for info .

Northstowe is going to be brilliant when it's finished, but it's very much lacking in facilities at the moment. Longstanton has a good village vibe, but will adjoin Northstowe.
Bar Hill has good facilities but you're committed to driving on the A14 as the sole route in. The roadworks at the mo are something else.

I do live in this area & work on the Science Park. I will PM you.

I live close to the science park and the traffic is bad, so if car is essential, just get as close as you can!

ihatethecold · 23/09/2019 12:50

Northstowe houses are overpriced and badly built. Look at villages like Willingham or Longstanton.

Biscuitsneeded · 23/09/2019 16:03

If your husband needs to drive OP I would look at the nicer North Cambridge villages. Histon, Cottenham, Haddenham, Willingham etc. And I would still go and look at Ely because although it's a bit further it's very nice, and straight down the A10 to the science park.
