Summer playgroups/classes for visiting one year-old

Hi

I'll be visiting my parents in Edinburgh (Bruntsfield) with my one year-old son in August. We'll probably be there for about three weeks. We live in Japan, and one of the aims of the visit is for him to get experience of the UK and of an English-speaking environment (I speak to him in English, so he understands it). So I'd really like to participate in some playgroups or classes where he can meet local children his age, but the ones I've found online all seem to close down during the summer holidays. And since I don't really know the set-up in the UK, it's hard to know where to start looking.

I'm looking for:

  • playgroups that run during the summer holidays
  • classes that run during the summer holidays and are willing to take a child for just a session or two (rather than having to sign up for a month or a term)
  • (probably not for this year, but in a year or two) daycare that will take a child for a short period

If any Edinburgh parents have any helpful information (even just advice on how to search), I'd be really grateful. Thanks!

st brides toddler center have a group that meets each Friday from 9.30am to 11.30am in the St Bride’s Community Centre – a former church that has been converted into a diverse arts and education space. There is a large enclosed soft-play area, plenty of ride-on toys as well as books and toys. There is no charge and refreshments are available from the centre’s cafe. you will need to check if this is on during the summer by emailing [email protected]

all the best x

When in August are you in Edinburgh? I'm afraid Edinburgh is challenging for playgroups etc during August as the Festival uses all the venues in town. However a lot of playgroups start when schools go back (from memory ours starts back on the 15th of August), so you would have more luck in the 2nd half of August.

I'm thinking between about 4 August and 25 August, though the dates may change a bit. So I think school term will restart during our visit.

Polwarth Church playgroup apparently continues through the summer, as does the stay-and-play at Christ Church Centre on Holy Corner. So there should be a few groups for us to attend.

Thanks.
