Just wanted to inform Durham mumsnetters that the council intend to build a new HQ on the Sands, opposite Freemans Quay.
5 storeys high in places. For 1000 employees. Also a new multi-storey car park at the bottom of Providence Row with "up to 277" spaces. Estimated cost £50m!!!
This is going to create a lot of conjestion in a place with poor access, and add to air polution problems which are already serious in Durham City. I don't see how they can justify this cost, when they have been cutting essential services. What's wrong with existing office space in somewhere like Belmont Business Park? Why is a new build required? It's a vanity project.
There is a protest on Sat 2nd March 11am, Durham Market place. For more info go to: Facebook: Durham City Matters
