Is Newport racist?

Hello,

Sorry, I don't mean to sound inflammatory. Genuine question, I am currently in Bristol and expecting another DC. We like Bristol but it's so expensive so thinking of moving outwards. The only thing is, we are an afro-carribbean family and I really wouldn't want to move my kids to a town where they would be subject to any abuse. My son gets none of that in his current school band is very happy. I wouldn't want to ruin that but I have heard that parts of Wales really do have a racism problem. I know there will be bigots wherever you go so just after a general sense please.

Thanks so much

Not being from South Wales originally, but now live in South Wales all I can say is that I have heard Newport is not the best place. I guess like anywhere there are good and bad places to live as Newport is huge

donajimena · 28/12/2018 16:07

I can't speak for Newport but Cardiff is very multicultural due to its long history as a port. Being as Newport also has docks I don't know if it is a similar situation.
Cardiff is much nicer than Newport anyway. I've lived in both.

WisdomSearcher · 28/12/2018 16:16

I live in Newport and loads of people from Bristol are moving her, mostly thanks to the lack of tolls I think Grin

It's not the best place nor is it the worst.

Loads of different cultures, religions and backgrounds here just like many other places I think.

Not sure where the racist info had come from but as for this way it's fine as far as I know. As a white woman!

Cardiff is a stone's throw away as is Cwmbran which is a nice little town centre about 5 miles north.

Check out each area carefully and if you have any questions I'm happy to help if I can.

Yes Cardiff is nicer but the property prices reflect that! 😂

In a general sense, Newport is no more racist than anywhere else.

However, there is a cynicism around the expected influx of bristolians - whatever their colour.

MozzchopsThirty · 28/12/2018 16:44

Newport is a massive dispersal town to asylum seekers
There's a lot of homelessness and huge drug problems
But then that's almost every city centre in the uk right now

There are nicer parts rogerstone and langstone

Jellybean100 · 28/12/2018 16:48

I would not move to Newport. But not because it’s racist. It’s very multicultural. But it’s rough. The outskirts can be okay. Langstone is very nice as stated above but depends on your budget. Chepstow/magor also nice, and although not the most multicultural I don’t really see that your children would face any problems with racism. I’d prefer Cardiff over Newport.

BBCK · 28/12/2018 16:58

Pretty multicultural in my opinion but there are white -only pockets, just like Bristol. The town centre itself has improved a lot but the people who frequent it can be ver very rough. I live on the outskirts with easy access to Cardiff, Newport and Cwmbran and if price is an issue and you want somewhere multicultural then Newport is a good bet, just pick your area wisely.

cucumbergin · 28/12/2018 16:59

Also would not move to Newport. Am not Afro-Caribbean but am mixed-race - have never felt safe in the city centre there.

Cardiff may be a better bet - are you looking to keep commuting into Bristol for work though?

Livedandlearned · 28/12/2018 17:05

I can't speak for Newport, but I agree with pp that Chepstow is a nice place to live and have never seen any racism. Newport is getting worse, the poverty, homelessness and drugs is a huge problem.

Carriewintermeadow · 28/12/2018 17:13

I live in Newport and can't wait to move away soon. Lived here three years and have watched things go from bad to worse. The city centre is very rough, lots of homeless people and muggings. There is a nice shopping centre though and Cardiff nearby is lovely. I'm sure there are nice areas, but priced accordingly.

Lookingforadvice123 · 28/12/2018 17:14

I am from and live in Cardiff and it's lovely! Don't move to Newport. Cardiff is hugely multi cultural and diverse; one of its many charms Smile

Buy in Pontypool, quick!

Mumoflil1 · 29/12/2018 14:33

Ah, thank you all. Lots of food for thought (I do wonder how the locals feel about the influx of Bristolians to Newport - probably the same as Bristolians feel about the influx of Londoners to Bristol Xmas Hmm ) I work from home 3 days per week but with travel into Bristol 1-2 times a week. I will certainly look into pontypool, Cardiff etc too! Thanks so much
