Help! Moving to Surrey from Aberdeenshire

Hi everyone, I'm completely new to Mumsnet but thought you might be able to help?

My husband's job has been relocated to Canary Wharf and we are looking at moving down from rural Aberdeenshire for it. Neither of us know much about the London/Surrey area apart from how expensive it is and difficult to get school places. It seems quite a daunting prospect!

We want a reasonably short commute (ideally around 45 mins) but we also want somewhere not too urban with plenty of green spaces as we are a pretty active family - running, cycling etc. So Surrey looks the best bet.

We've started looking at the Esher area, so I was wondering whether anyone has any recommendations or thoughts about this area or any alternatives. We'll be renting (with a decent budget for the relocation) and we need to find a good Primary (for a year 5) and Secondary (year 8) school.
