King’s House.

Does anyone have a DS at King’s House School in Richmond upon Thames? I’m considering it for DS who is due in June. DD is due to go to Old Vicarage so it makes sense geographically and I liked it when I visited, but always good to get a view from the Mumsnet jury. If you decided against KH, where did you pick and why? Is it imperative to send them to the nursery if you want a reception place? The admissions info indicates not, but sometimes official policy deviates from reality. Finally, how good is it for getting the boys through 11+/common entrance and into the top London boys’ schools? Thank you.

I’ve just typed two replies on the app which vanished - so this is a test message!

Yay - it worked!

Ok - third time lucky! I can’t advise about admissions but I can offer a few words about secondary transfer. Kings House won’t prepare your son for 11+ as they expect him to stay till 13. If you look at the leavers destinations online you will see that a lot of boys go on to boarding schools rather than London day schools. I would only choose a prep school like KH if I was happy with boarding as a possible outcome.

Most of the London day schools admit at 11, and the main ones with a significant 13+ intake are highly academic. This may or may not suit your son, but if it doesn’t the options are limited.

If it were me I would seriously consider one of the preps which finish at 11, eg Kew College or Broomfield, as there are much broader options at 11.

Also you might be better to post this on the Education board for a better response.

Best wishes!

Thank you very much Lady: I really appreciate it. I will definitely look at Kew College and Broomfield (I think I didn’t apply there for DD due to commute) but may be worth re-thinking for DS. I’m not averse to boarding school (it could be good for a boisterous boy) but would definitely want to keep options open for the day schools at 11 - not least because he is still wriggling around in the womb!! Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. Best wishes.
