Thinking about moving to York

Hi all, my family and I currently live in New Zealand, but are thinking seriously about moving to York to live ( it looks like an awesome place!). We would like to buy a 4 bedroom house in a village close to York, with a good secondary school catchment area. Budget is up to 400 pounds. We would rent first. But where exactly to live? and where to stay away from ;)
I would be grateful for any insights and recommendations from locals!

Hi, before buying a house it would be useful to look up the crime rate in the area at www.police.uk and also York sometimes flood, you can see if the area you look at is in the flood zone or not at flood-map-for-planning.service.gov.uk as home insurance will be higher if the house is in the flood zone.

Looking up for a house at rightmove.co.uk also show the OFSTED report of the school within the catchment area, which I found quite useful when I moved house 5 years ago.

I lived in Acomb for 2 years. There are nice bits and not-so-nice bits. If you rent first you'll get a good idea of the area. We lived on Malvern Avenue and I can confirm it's a lovely road! Good luck with your search.

So thinking Fulford School area, Dunnington has come up, and seems very nice...not on a flood plain, low crime rate, would love to know what the village is like, and is there much to do for teenagers? my kids are 10, 12 and 14, all girls .
Also, any other villages in the Fulford catchment that are nice? we are holidaying in the UK end of June, and we will be having a scout around...

Dunnington is nice and in the outskirt of York, has a great park and play area for kids and also near to York Maze (a day out adventure place for kids and family). It is about an hour away to the coast, Scarborough and Bridlington.

Heslington and Bishopthorpe are also in the Fulford school catchment area. I live in Badger Hill, near University of York - which also lovely and quiet (especially in the summer, when students are away). However it is in the catchment are of Archbishop Holgate secondary school.

botanica, Archbishop Holgate is also outstanding OFSTED, I think, but it mentions admissions take faith into consideration, not sure if that means you cant get in unless you are of that particular faith?

Archbishop Holgates offer 30% foundation (faith) places and don’t always fill them all (spare places are offered as community places). It is Ofsted ‘outstanding’.

Dunnington is a lovely village and has the benefit of a quick and regular bus service to York which most villages that side don't have!

So, resurrecting this thread as we are heading to the UK very soon, any locals have an opinion about Full Sutton? It looks like it's in Archbishop Holgate zone, but Huntington is also nearby, not sure if it is in zone though.

Nothing useful to add but how exciting. I love York and lots to do in surrounding areas. Lovely Yorkshire countryside. I truly wish you the best of luck.

Full Sutton exists mainly to support the local prison. Not a nice place at all.

Strensall is ok, large army base there. Are you sure it will be Huntington catchment? It might be Joseph Rowntree. Huntington is likely to be oversubscribed for most year groups.

Strensall is in the Huntington catchment area, and is a great school. Both my kids go there. The army base has been sold off for housing which could mean it getting very busy in the future. Its a good village to live in now though.

I know a policeman who lives in Dunnington. He said he’s policed all over York and and Dunnington is by far the safest place he’s ever policed. If I were you I’d be looking at bishopthorpe (which is cycleable into town) or Dunnington (which is a bit further out, more remote and on the ‘wrong side’ for Leeds if that’s a concern). Naburn is also very nice but it’s very small which may frustrate your older kids. I don’t know much about Huntingdon etc though and I understand there’s some good places to live around there too.
