Guildford or Godalming

Hello

We are looking to move from Epsom to either of the above after visiting both areas and would love some advice from locals.

After looking round both areas today we have come home and started looking at what we could get within our budget.

On Rightmove we've seen a few properties in the centre of Guildford. I think one is on Artillery Terrace. But before we book in for viewings we wanted to get some ideas from locals on the city centre, whether it is safe to live in and whether there are any areas to avoid.

The same for Godalming as it looks so pretty but we don't want to be deceived by its good looks :)

We see there are a few in Godalming for Meadrow, Portsmouth Road and Croft Road that we would potentially want to go and view.

We need to be within walking distance of the train station ideally as I need to commute into Waterloo each day and my OH works in Portsmouth for some of the week.

Any thoughts would be welcomed!

It’s all safe.

Yes agree, all very safe, which isn't to say there isn't the occasional bit of trouble, especially in the town centres, but nothing to be overly concerned about.

Guildford's a town btw not a city..

OP - I prefer Guildford but probably because I know it much better. The traffic is truly awful much of the time but there is far more going on though on the flip side it's much busier. It's more a question of what you think of the houses and the actual places.

Thanks all for your responses, really reassuring.

They are new areas to us so just want to find out as much as possible.

Both are safe. I’m happy walking on my own at night in both places. I live in Haslemere, so would personally prefer to live in Godalming as it’s smaller. They are both so close to each other that it doesn’t make much difference when it comes to access to things to do. I tend to drive to Guildford for shopping and eating out.

Meadrow and PortsmouthRoad are the main road from Guildford through godalming to Milford, so can be busy, you’ll need to check for noise. Croft Road is great if the house has its own parking space.

Personally I would rather live in Guildford as there is more going socially IMO. Also check out the train times, the trains are fairly frequent to Waterloo from Godalming, but it's an even easier commute to and fro from Guildford.

At the risk of being the annoying pedantic one, it's a town not a city.
