Are you due to have a baby.Would you be prepared to help me?
I am by professional background a Nurse. I am currently undertaking a 4 year training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at 'The Bowlby Centre' in Islington. As part of the requirements I need to observe a new born baby for the first 18 months of his/her life.
The aim of the Psychotherapy course is to develop skills of observation on the emotional and physical development of the infant within his/her relationships with the primary care givers.
Your commitment would be to allow an hour long observation visit per week.Unbroken contact with your baby is important. Visits would be arranged to maximise continuity. So apart for necessary planed breaks, regular meetings would be maintained for a period of 18 months.
During observation visits you would not have to do anthying special-just continue with your usual routine. For instance,if your baby happens to be asleep for the duration of the visit,it doesn't matter, there will be much for the observer to see and think about. It also does not matter if you intend to have your baby cared for by others at any time during the period,so long as the trainee may continue to observe your baby with alternate carers.
As you baby gets older,he/she will begin to observe and interact with the trainee. How your baby relates with others, including siblings, regular carers, the observer or total strangers,is all part of what the trainees need to see and understand.
It takes a special kind of generosity on your part to offer to do all this. You will be helping a professional in a critical part of their training. When evaluating the experience of infant observation, many trainees consider it to have been the most rewarding and enjoyable part of the course.
