Registry Office - Wedding witnesses required

We are planning on marrying at Guildford Registry Office on morning of September 30th and are looking at 'hiring' either a couple, or two friends who would be available that morning and like to be our witnesses!

Have you asked any of your real friends, who could keep your marriage secret, if that's what you want? If not, then do so. Otherwise, I wonder why you might be asking complete strangers to be your witnesses. For a fee? Alarm bells, for me. Sorry, sounds a little odd.
