Chapter books for a five year old

Hi there! My daughter has not long turned five and has been asking us to read chapter books to her. We started off with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but I wondered if anyone had any other wonderful suggestions? I've got one of those Roald Dahl collections but I may need to check some of them first as she can be prone to nightmares - BFG is going to have to wait! Thanks in advance everyone!

My ds loved the Titchy Witch stories at that age but I can't remember if they have chapters.

We've been reading chapter books to my boy for a year or so (he's just turned 5 too). It can be a bit hit-and-miss, so try anything and be prepared to scrap it if it's not landing well; I tend to read him the first chapter and then ask him if he wants to carry on with it. If not, we'll put it to one side for a year or so. We've had success with:

  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
  • James and the Giant Peach
  • The Firework Maker's Daughter
  • Swallows and Amazons (and a couple of the sequels)
  • Emil and the Detectives
  • Ottoline and the Yellow Cat
  • Haroun and the Sea of Stories
...and we're currently reading The Sword in the Stone, which regularly has him fits of helpless laughter.

Good luck!

Thanks so much ojell - that's an amazing list! I am so pleased she wants to get involved with longer books and it means we still get to read with her (we are both bookworms!). We still read picture books with her and, of course, there are school reading books to work through. It's exciting isn't it!! Thanks again - the idea of reading the first chapter is a great one. Ooh and just seen the suggestion from RamsayBoltonsConscience - not heard of that one so will look that one up too. Happy days!
