Hi. My son has autism and ADHD. He has high anxiety about his academic achievements as he is behind his peers at school and he doesn't like school due to his difficulty of processing information slowly and having an overload of the information that he then zones out and can't concentrate anymore. Therefore his concentration and focus is low. He really struggles with maths. Positives are that he enjoys history and once he has an idea for a story in English he writes so quickly without stopping to check grammar, as he is worried he will forget what he needs to write. I am in turmoil on what secondary school to send him to - Woking High or Winston Churchill? Last year I visited both schools and I'm going again this year. I live very close to Winston. I met with both senco's and both were helpful. I hear Woking High has a great pastoral team and are empathetic to SEN children. However, Winston seemed to have what my son is interested in- recording studio for music, he loves drumming and has lessons. He used to go to drama lessons but stopped, thinking he had grown out of it. However I feel he has a gift for dramatics as he is funny and loves to do impressions of people.
Recently there was the Surrey guide to schools. Woking high had 5 stars for a child's progress and Winston only had two. My son is not at the average curriculum level and always 'working towards'. I would like him to get a few gsce's especially in English and maths at level 4/C grade, but with Winston showing children not progressing well I'm not sure if it's the right school for him. He has had a statement since he was 5 but transferring to an EHCP, in the process of mediating with the Local Authority as he's been turned down to continue to an EHCP and I am worried without this, his extra 1-1 teaching and the school he is at or going to for secondary, won't support him effectively enough just with SEN. Any mum's out there who can help with my decision?
