Spending x-mss holidays in Edinburgh with dc

Dear Edinburgh Mumsnetters,

We are travelling to Edinburgh with dc 5&9 and will be there on Hogmanay Smile.
I would be really grateful for any recommendations such as places to visit, what to do with dc on Hogmanay (do you take your dc there or is it too crowded /touristy?)

Any ideas and tips warmly appreciated.

Thanks

This event is new for Hogmany but might be worth a trip

National museum of Scotland usually has a nice programme of Hogmanay events for kids, check their website.

I reckon the listings will give a good guide of what age is appropriate for the many different things that will be happening. I wouldn't recommend taking them out for the bells on Hogmanay. It's a while since I've been out in town on the night itself but I'd expect it to be very busy and for most people to be fairly drunk. Good natured drunk full of hugs, kisses and dancing in the street but could get stressful with small ones.

More details will emerge on-line of what is else is on, through Edinburgh's festivals website/Edinburgh's Hogmanay. The Christmas market will probably still be on, outdoor ice rink, fair ground in the gardens, probably a candle lit procession at some point. Loads.
