Me, dh and dd (6) are planning a relocation from Scarborough to Durham area later this year. We basically can live anywhere as we work mostly from home (dh has a contract job 1 day per month in Sunderland so travelable distance is important).
We want a nice, welcoming area...good schools, plenty going on and with a country or attractive feel. I am quite interested in the new grammer school opening up (in Durham)Wanting to spend up to £220k on a house. I'm just looking for the best fit for us..any suggestions.

I wouldn't move to Stanley if I had your budget. ( I live in Consett a few miles up the road from Stanley)

Whilst Consett has been regenerated and improves, Stanley has been left behind. Quite a few rough spots too

Old Shotton is nice

feelslikethewaltonshere · 26/07/2017 13:26

Thanks again everyone...it's been really helpful. Does anyone know the catchment area for Durham Johnston School? It looks like the best school I have ever seen in my life!

Maybe give them a ring? Local council will know.

Johnston catchment is worth looking at online. It's a great school, although not to everyone's taste.

Great Lumley is nice isn't it - don't know that area well but get good vibes

We love it, it's friendly and has great links to areas Smile

DurhamDurham, if your house was in the right place, we'd jump on it like fresh cakes. Unfortunately, we need to be in easy public transport distance of Spenny (DS2 in school there from September with no transport and I don't drive!) and road to teesside (where DH works)

DurhamDurham · 27/07/2017 06:34

Pick Good luck, hope you find the right house in the right area. It's a stressful time but it'll be worth it once you've moved and are settled Smile

FreakinScaryCaaw · 27/07/2017 06:57

Pickachew isn't OP is she?

DurhamDurham · 27/07/2017 07:11

No Pick isn't the op but I was responding to the message about my house. I'm nice to everyone who is complementary about my house Grin

FreakinScaryCaaw · 27/07/2017 15:29

I think I found it it's lovely.

DurhamDurham · 27/07/2017 16:39

Thank you, just need to find a buyer for it now. Too big for me and my husband but it's a fab family home Smile

PickAChew · 27/07/2017 17:00

I'll have to stalk it later.

We've worked out what we want and roughly where. Just need to get rid of this one first.

PickAChew · 27/07/2017 18:45

It's gorgeous!

Now if you could just move it south a bit!

DurhamDurham · 27/07/2017 18:50

I'll see what I can do Grin

breakfastnotattiffanys · 28/07/2017 08:40

Belmont,Carrville area - near Durham city - has some nice properties at moment ..easy commute to Sunderland by car or bus

Gatekeeper · 18/08/2017 18:44

ah @Pickachew - I could have found you a fab house in Spenny a few months ago

I am not far away at all; I am from there and my sister and her family still live there

Gatekeeper · 18/08/2017 18:45

my kids go to St Leonard's in Durham which is also a good school

PickAChew · 18/08/2017 19:54

We've been actually viewing houses in Durham city, this week. It's blooming exhausting! We think we've found a favourite and a maybe, though. The favourite is big, quirky and adorable but needs some TLC.

PickAChew · 18/08/2017 19:56

Also found out that we will have transport from there, which makes life a lot easier, once we move.
