Moving to Skipton?

Oh I hope you lovely people can help me. I'm 50 and a Londoner born and bred and brought up in inner city really friendly but it got rough and expensive and I move out to Kent (near Maidstone) in my 20's. Never really felt I fitted it (people are not overly friendly but made the most of it and have a good set of neighbours but it's been hard work). Son 23 lives up in Warrington (in between Manchester and Liverpool) and if I want a relationship with him I feel I need to be nearer. Hubby not keen on that area (said it's too flat). He likes doing triathlons. A place which we like very much is Skipton. Been a couple of times and I must admit that people up north have been very friendly towards us as we are chatty etc. Seriously trying to persuade my husband to rent out house down south (only small 2 bed mid terraced) and rent up in the Skipton area and give it a go at least for a year. Hubby was born in Wakefield but moved down when he was one. Not many relatives left. We wouldn't know a soul but feel that we could make friends with new work colleagues, joining a church. Hubby loves his job in Kent and that is the downside. His take home pay is £1300 a month and I wondered if he would earn the same in the Skipton area. He in unskilled as such but installs BBQ's (fancy ones) and delivers and does warehouse work. I worked for the NHS in admin and will try my hand at anything from admin to shop work. Any advice about jobs and where we would rent a house. Need a 2 bed and hubby has 2 push bikes and a motorbike so would need garage/shed. Any advice. Hubby thinks I am going through mid life crisis but I feel like I need a change and what to give it a go.

Hi Lovetravelling!

I live in Skipton and it's a great place. I can't really speak for jobs in Skipton, because I don't actually work in Skipton (I work in Leeds - the train network to Leeds is really good).

As for places to rent, two bedroom houses are common around here, but if you want to live in the middle of Skipton, you're highly unlikely to find a place with a garage. Some might have a shed, but you might struggle to get a motorbike into it. There are houses not in the centre of Skipton that would be more suitable (and Skipton isn't very big, so even slightly further out would be walking distance to the town centre). There's a very vibrant community, and certainly if you join a church, you're bound to make friends right away. Us northerners are generally a friendly lot.

Good luck!
