I'm moving this autumn to Plymouth. So much will change- job, moving in with other half. I should be excited but I'm so worried and upset. I have lived much further north for most of my life and more recently in a town in south central.

We are lucky to be financially very stable and can afford somewhere lovely but I can't see anything on right move that fits the bill. Ideally I'd like children soon and would like a town or village that is naice, with some local amenities, pavements to push buggies etc.

I'd love to avoid a long commute to Derriford.

Please please can local folk suggest some good areas to live and tell me it'll all be ok. wibble Flowers

Manadon and Roborough are nice as well as parts of the area around Derriford itself. To the north you could consider Yelverton or Tavistock. To the east, Plymstock, Yealmton, Newton Ferrers (v expensive though) or Modbury. To the west maybe Saltash or Callington, Liskeard is probably a bit too far to travel if you want to keep commuting to a minimum. There are also some older threads on here about where to live. In Plymouth, just search for them. Good luck!

If you have deep pockets look at Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo, Yealmpton, Modbury, Ermington and Ugborough. Further afield Salcombe and Dartmouth - but those would prob be too great a commute. Nice areas of Plymouth are Tamerton, Manadon, Peverell.

Thanks so much Flowers. I've had a look at old threads too. Can you tell me about Tamerton Folliet? I've heard really mixed things (mainly bad)

Embarrassingly I get travel sick and venturing too far into South Hams makes me Envy

Really appreciate your replies

Tamerton Foliot!
Not too far from the hospital, great primary school, nice and quiet and still feels like a village - good community spirt

We moved here after several years in Chester and various parts of Scotland before that.. I've found it easy to make friends here and I now wouldn't want to leave!

Look at it this way - you are going to be lucky enough to live in an area a lot of the rest of the country love to holiday in - we have a bit of everything here 👍🏻😬

secretselkie · 14/07/2017 20:58

Just to add, I'd love to know what you've heard.. Preey sure I can refute it and put your mind at rest x

Thanks Selkie Flowers. Another Scot in Devon Grin . I'm guessing you are from your user name. I had googled Tamerton Follet and read the rantings of a right wing sounding man and paid too much heed. Good to know it's nice. Still trying to find the "perfect home"

Poirotspen · 31/07/2017 20:01

Argh! I'm destined to keep spelling it wrongly. Foliot. It was this Blush

Poirotspen · 31/07/2017 20:02

Also from some word of mouth comments about it "going downhill". Mainly "in my day these were fields" sort of comments though

Poirotspen · 31/07/2017 22:07

Oh weird. I seem to name changed to an old name! I am Wooly!!

Thecurlywurlymum · 31/07/2017 22:11

Tavistock is lovely

Marcipex · 24/09/2017 19:33

Tavistock is okay, easy commute to Derriford. I wouldn't live in Callington .
I like Totnes but it's probably too far.

Marcipex · 24/09/2017 19:35

Just seen this is old, no idea why it came up.
I hope you like wherever you chose.

Mouthfulofquiz · 29/09/2017 06:36

Properties in tamerton foliot can be prone to flooding so check that out. Hartley is really nice.
Everywhere is a long commute to derriford at the moment due to the roadworks everywhere. To give an example, I live 2.5 miles from derriford and I leave an hour to get there plus do a nursery drop off...
Ivybridge is also nice and not a windy road if you get car sick!

Mouthfulofquiz · 29/09/2017 06:38

If you are working at derriford, there are a few good nurseries nearby too - close to the hospital.

OCSockOrphanage · 18/10/2017 09:38

Don't choose Callington, some nice villages on the Cornwall side like St Mellion and St Dominick. And as someone says, all around Derriford is a traffic nightmare. In Plymouth, I'd look at all the places mentioned plus Stoke because it's reputedly up and coming and has much prettier houses than most of the city.

Inspi10 · 18/10/2017 16:42

Ivybridge is good and lovely property’s. You can go straight on the A38 down to derriford takes 20mins. I moved from Plymouth to here, there are 4 good schools, lots of nursery’s, shops and parks and Tesco Lee mill a few minutes drive away.
Pavements everywhere and nice walks😄
