how to find cheap flat

I have a new staff member who has come to Cambridge from overseas, who is asking me for help in finding somewhere cheap to rent. She has a car, so location not critical. Work is on the Babraham campus. She is looking for a one bed flat, not a house share. She is mid-30s and here alone (she has a boyfriend who comes over now and again).

Has anyone got any suggestions I could pass on to her?

How about Haverhill? I'm guessing much cheaper than somewhere closer like Sawston.

I don't think there is any such thing as a cheap flat in Cambridge! A house share is obviously the cheapest option but I can totally understand why she doesn't want to live in one at her age. Gumtree might be an option for anything not on RightMove.

What does she define as 'cheap'? And does she want to be in Cambridge itself or would a village be OK? Cherry Hinton might be a good compromise.

Although I find it eye wateringly expensive as it's more than my monthly mortgage payment on a 3 bed semi, but I guess those are the prices people pay... Affordable housing is a real problem in Cambridge.

One here in Linton, probably handier than Cherry Hinton but again not cheap.

Thanks for the links & suggestions.
She is currently paying £1100, but it leaves her with almost nothing after bills and travel, so £750 would be a lot better.

She could also look at Saffron Walden, as there seem to be a few flats there.

Quite a few properties to rent in Saffron Walden. This would be a journey of about 10 miles to Babraham.

Intercounty

Prices seem to be from £475 pcm for a 1 bed.
