Where to live near Oxshott

Our family is relocating from the Middle East and our children have places at school in Oxshott. We will be new to the area, and are a bit at a loss as to where to consider living. We're city mice, but crave a bit more space. It needs to be somewhere not too far from school, yet also commutable to central London. From the map, Esher and Cobham seemed to be options, but I've heard that traffic on the road from Esher to Oxshott is horrible, and that journeys from Cobham can also be difficult. Any tips for possible house locations would be enormously appreciated. Thank you!

I assume your children have places at Danes Hill or Reeds? Why not just live in Oxshott? The only plus of living in Esher is the train line to town which is faster to London than from Oxshott. You could look at Leatherhead and Ashtead which would get you more for your money and not too far away but Oxshott is a lovely village to live in. Loads of woods arounds for walks, the facilities of Cobham shops just minutes away yet more of a village life than Cobham. The Village Club is great - today they are having a huge fete! But do tennis / cricket etc. And on the train line to London Waterloo and the A3 is v close too!

Thanks user1486321186. Oxshott is lovely, but having lived in cities for decades, we're not quite ready for a village. Ideally, we'd also like to be near one of the faster train links into London (as we will both be working there). Hadn't previously considered Leatherhead or Ashtead, so will look into them.

Wimbledon then? It's not unheard of Wimbledon dwellers to have their children at school in Oxshott / Cobham. Surbiton? They can all be on the same train line. Look at the schools and if they have transport options (school buses) and where they come from. I'm not saying you will use the transport but it'll give you a flavour of where the children might come from and you can use that as a starting point.
But don't under estimate living near where your children go to school. It makes everything so much easier.

DS is at Reeds. He has a lot of friends who live in Wimbledon, it is on the same line as Oxshott very quick journey. Fast journey to Waterloo or out to Oxshott from there and on the District Line.

I work in Leatherhead it is also very villagey so not sure if it would be right for you. I think the station is not on the fast line to Waterloo and the traffic on the A244 from Leatherhead to Oxshott is truly murderous in the morning.

Thank you both! We're currently looking at both Surbiton and Wimbledon (and their environs). We're trying to get the balance between getting to work relatively easily and avoiding the kids having to spend too long travelling to/from school. Whatever we decide, we'll rent to begin with, until we get a better sense of the rhythms of the area.
