Can children apply for free school meals themselves?

My 2nd year 13 yo child has just told me that she has been buying/sharing lunch with another child who should be on free school meals but according to my child the mum is a junkie and she hasn't applied for them. The other child never has any money either and usually gets no lunch except for what my child gives her. I don't have an issue with my child sharing her lunch even though we are on free meals. She gets enough to eat and is relatively privileged despite my low income. She was afraid to tell me she's been helping out this other child for ages because she thought I'd be annoyed :o(
My question is is there any way the child can get free meals without the parent applying for them? TIA

I would speak to the head teacher about this. I'm sure they will be able to figure it out and gets these kids a proper lunch.

Yes, I am proud of her. I told her the child is not our responsibility but on the other hand everyone is our responsibility and she said 'I know exactly what you mean'.
I suspect there are other children in the same situation as there is a higher than average proportion of kids from deprived backgrounds at the school but I think I'll speak to the guidance teacher without mentioning names and see if they have any protocol. It just rankles that the kids who need help the most aren't getting it.

Good for your daughter in sharing and also telling you... I would contact the school guidance teacher and speak to them. They will be able to step in.

I hope this situation gets sorted out.

I know a primary school teacher who had the same situation with a pupil and unfortunately the parent has to apply and sign the form. Teacher couldn't do it on the child's behalf She made extra sandwiches fir that child every single day. Clutching at straws though, maybe it's different at secondary? Guidance teacher probably the best shout.
