Hi All

Me and my partner named our 13 week old daughter Esme ( on Me), is that too unusual, does it have to be Esmay?
We both loved her name but I feel down as im worried it's a bit out there so wanted to see what you lovely ladies thought from my area, anyone know an Esme?
We live in Droitwich xx

I think that is a lovely name!

sotiredbutworthit · 12/01/2017 22:36

Means "loved" in Ancient French I think.

CoffeeDiamonds · 12/01/2017 22:42

I have an Esme - pronounced Es-mee NOT Es-may. She's a teenager now. Apart from occasionally having to correct some people, it's never been an issue.

Does your daughter like her name? Xx

There was a post about the pronunciation of Esme not that long ago on MN - half the posters thought it was pronounced Es-mee, half thought Es-may. It's a beautiful name. I would go for Es-mee. Other names ending in 'e' take an 'ee' sound like Phoebe, Chloe, Penelope, Daphne, so Esme should too.

I think it is a lovely name! I recently discovered two little girls at a play centre called Maude and Esme and I thought at the time how lovely the names were x

CactusFred · 13/01/2017 22:21

I'm in Malvern and I've met a couple of Es-May.

CandleCath · 13/01/2017 22:29

Esme is lovely, I knew a lovely woman called Esme when I was growing up, modern ones seem to be Esmay (pronounced as it's written) but to me Esme (Es-me) is the traditional name. I know two Esmays but no Esmes.

user1484259215 · 14/01/2017 10:58

Should I change the pronociation to Esmay but still spell it Esme? X

MollyHuaCha · 14/01/2017 12:06

No. It's meant to be spelt Esme and pronounced Ez-mee!

QuimReaper · 14/01/2017 12:14

user it's spelt Esme however it's pronounced so definitely don't change it to be spelt Esmay!

If you like the Es-me pronunciation then keep it. Esme threads come up all the time and it's always pretty evenly split. I don't make any assumptions if I see the name, I'd always just ask someone how they pronounce it. It's unusual to have a name with two different pronunciations - I can't offhand think of another - but it's not a sufficiently unusual name to cause her any bother. Most people have heard it pronounced both ways.

MollyHuaCha · 14/01/2017 12:32

People called Louis prob get the same mispronunciations all the time - Loo-ee or Loo-iss.
For Esme, go with the pronunciation you like the most and stick with it. Smile

QuimReaper · 14/01/2017 13:05

Very good point Molly, that's another example!

SparePants · 14/01/2017 13:17

Ha I was just going to jump in and say Louis! I have one. It never occurred to me that people may mispronounce it as Lewis, but it seems that everybody does.

Champers4Pampers · 14/01/2017 14:37

I have a friend called Esme. I prefer it pronounced me rather than may.

I thinks it's nice and unusual without trying to hard. It's also easily spelt so not setting DD up for a lifetime of having her name spelt wrong.

I think it suits a little girl without being too cutesy and it works well for an adult too. X

I teach in Droitwich and have taught a couple. Nice name.

Your post is quite identifying though - you might want to get it removed if you are worried about anonymity on here.

CandleCath · 15/01/2017 15:33

Snap! I also teach in Droitwich :)

user1484259215 · 16/01/2017 21:32

It looks as if the name pronounced Es-ME isn't too unusual then. If love to keep it as it suits her, if I experience any more issues. I'll just pronounce it Esmay and spell
It Esmay so it dosent happen again!! Xx
