Moving to Lyme

Hi all

My husband and I are seriously looking at moving from the north west to Lyme Regis.

We know the area well and have always loved visiting, but living there is a different matter!

We would really appreciate people's feedback on the area generally, specifically also in relation to traffic, both east towards Poole and west towards Exeter - particularly in the summer holiday period.

Any advice gratefully received!

Would you need to commute to work?

Yes. My husband is home office based, I would be looking for a job. We have two little ones aged 5 and 3 so any job I get would involve some travel to coincide with getting back for school pick up.

It's a general question really, we can't decide whether the whole area would be completely gridlocked in the summer (particularly a35) or whether it would be 'busy but bearable'

I would add that in previous years we have always visited out of peak summer time

I have visited there a couple of times in peak season and it's awful for traffic, we live further east in another holiday hotspot and then to not go out in bank holidays, yu will be going against the flow of traffic which is in your favour and your DH should be able to pick children up. It depends whether you can cope with the hoards of people in the summer and living in a quiet town in the winter, I love visiting but not sure that I would want to live there

I know someone who has been commuting to Lyme from near me since September but he leaves and his wife says it hasn't been too bad but they are now moving closer.

Thank you for the reply! We know that Lyme itself is going to be v busy, can we guess the a35 is also going to be rammed? If it is a question of thinking twice before getting in the car and driving somewhere then we may think again.

I think if you can go down there in the height off summer for a couple of days and see what it is like, you seem to have done it the other way round to most people who visit places in the summer and think what a great place to love but don't know what it is like in the depths of the quiet season

I live just down the road from Lyme, many my of my work colleagues live in Lyme itself. The traffic in Summer isn't anymore of an issue really, albeit the A35 is very busy it continues to flow, unless of course there has been a traffic incident.
Good luck with the move if you decide to go ahead, it's a fantastic area to live in
