What's it like as a gig venue?

Does it have any sort of reputation?

What's it like getting from there to the train station after a gig?

Ds wants to go to his first ever gig there, and I'm coming over all anxious mother.

Oh god it's been years since I last went there. It's not in the greatest area but I never felt unsafe walking to it. Southampton has changed beyond recognition during the 8 odd years since I moved out of the city centre so St Mary's might have cleaned up a bit. It's twenty or so minute's walk from Southampton Central, quite straightforward to get to.

I love it as a venue but it's essentially a small pub at the front with a big room at the back for bands to play in. It's unique in that the band have to meander through the the crowd to get to the stage!

The Joiners is both famous and notorious.
Back in the day the nicotine lumps on the fan would occasionally fly off and stick to the walls Smile
BUT
its a well known and respected venue
taxis to and from the station are easy, or its not a bad walk across town
and walking back there will be others heading the same way
tell him to stick to the roads not the parks is all

I've only been there once when my boyfriend played. It's pretty small. But it's a famous venue that has hosted some very famous bands in their early days.
