Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties

As the mother of a child with dyslexia myself, I know how difficult it can be when you first suspect your child may have a learning difficulty.

At least 1 in 5 students have a specific learning difficulty but many go undetected because neither the student nor the teacher is aware that they have processing difficulties; though it may be evident that there is frustration with learning.

Underlying difficulties which affect learning

The key indicators of Dyslexia include: poor short-term or working verbal memory; slow speed of processing and weak phonological skills (the ability to match sounds to letters and to break words down into segments and then blend them together). Dyslexia exists on a continuum and other difficulties which can cluster around it may include: poor concentration, poor visual memory, difficulties with sequencing ideas, poor organisation and weak fine motor skills.
