Scottish move

I was born in Edinburgh but lived in for 30 years, I have two young children, hubby considers himself scottish as his dad's from Scotland too. My mum and family are Scotland and I love holidays there.
Now, were considering a move. We were thinking on retirement (20 years time!) But due to last weeks shit, might bring it forward. I'm after advice NOT another in out debate.
Hubby is a postman, I'm a police officer. Has anyone done the move and can offer advice? I'd like commutable to Edinburgh as that's where family are but I don't want and can't afford Edinburgh itself. Any advice anyone?

Peebles is really lovely. The commute to Edinburgh is well over an hour though at rush hour. But it is a lovely place to bring up children.

Thanks for the reply. Don't suppose you know any police officers I could speak to?
