Moving from Exeter to Birmingham

We may be moving to Birmingham in the next 6 months and I just wanted to find out about good secondary schools in the area. My daughter is in year 6 at the moment and at an independent school in Exeter. Any recommendations of both state and independent schools would be most welcome. Thanks.

I don't know a lot about Independent schools - there is a bit of a collection of them in Edgbaston, near the University.

Birmingham isn't a 'grammar school area' but there are about 8 schools in the City for which you can take an exam. They then take the highest placed people - no catchment areas. I understand it works out around about 2% of the cohort moving to secondary, so very, very competitive.

Depends which area of the City you are moving to. Sutton Coldfield has a good reputation for all their schools being good schools. You would need to live close to them though - wouldn't be able to get a place, even if you were daft enough to consider travelling across the City (which I wouldn't recommend).

However, if your dd is already in Yr6, I suspect you will struggle at this time of year to find a place at any of the schools you might consider to be "the best" schools, as places will have already been allocated.

Try Edgbaston high school. A large independent girls school with a good reputation.
