Walthamstow...please comment

Hi all,
we are considering a move to Walthamstow with our little boy and would really appreciate some advice. We heard people raving about the place and people who are absolutely horrified. We visited the area and apart from Hoe street (unpleasant, I might say) we walked around the village area and walked north towards the William Morris gallery and had a good impression. Many pretty well kept houses and the schools seem nice (mostly good, some outstanding).
Please any advice/comment is welcome!

Hi... any advice/info/ideas? Please anyone? I know there are other threads on this subject but they are too old. Looking forward to hearing from you all

We've been here 4 years, and really like it. Can't comment on the quality of the schools from experience, but the streets are always filled with buggies and there's really good parks, not just Lloyd Park (although it's very good) but little ones down side streets. Hoe street is improving in the end towards the park, and a lot of independent places have opened up, nice cafés etc. I think anyone who is horrified is very out of date!

It's nice, I agree people who are horrified are out of date. The Village is just a tiny part of it, though, and quite a lot of it is more like Hoe Street. And - unless you drive everywhere, which will be tricky if you buy in the Village - you'll spend a lot of time passing through Hoe Street, so if you think it's that unpleasant...

In my opinion, it's massively overpriced now. Very average terraced houses are going for silly money, and a lot of amenities that drew people to the place in the first place are going to make way for flats.

Where else are you looking, and where do you live currently?

I don't mean to sound so doom and gloom, I really like it here, but if I was buying now it's not where I'd be looking.

Meant to add, there are some good Walthamstow-based facebook groups you might want to have a look at to get more of a feel/ask questions: Walthamstow Parents is good.

We moved here 3 years ago, we now have a 16 months old, who is at nursery here. We moved here from Islington and of course it's not as nice but muchore affordable. The transport links are great (busy but great to have train and tube). I think it depends on where you are coming from. It's very urban and some bits are really not nice but there are some great businesses and lots of young families. We are very happy here but live right by the station so it's super convenient.
