Hello! I am a fourth year student at The University of Edinburgh, studying Psychology and Linguistics. I am looking for 2 and 3 year olds to help me with my final year research project on language prediction.
The study takes around 25 mins and can take place either at our child friendly lab in 7 George Square (travel expenses will be reimbursed) or at your own home if you live in either Cramond/Blackhall/Davidson's Mains or Barnton.
Children will be asked to play a game which involves listening to sentences like ‘Look! Can you see an apple’ whilst looking at two pictures on a laptop screen e.g. an apple and a balloon. Their task is to try and find the correct picture. During this, an eye tracker (a small device that picks up light reflected of our eyes) will measure where they are looking. I want to know if they look at the picture of the apple before they hear the word apple being spoken e.g. do they guess that the word apple is coming next after they hear ‘an’ because they know that you can’t have ‘an balloon’.
I will also carry out a short assessment of how many words your child understands using the British Picture Vocabulary Scale. This is to see if vocabulary knowledge is related to the ability to guess the correct picture.
I look forward to hearing from you. If you are interested in taking part please contact me at [email protected].
