Refugee crisis - can we help?

I was just wondering if us Kent mumsnetters could do anything to help the refugee crisis locally?

I'm sitting planning my dd's birthday party and can't get the images of the poor drowned Syrian child out of my head. We're so lucky here. I don't have much money to donate and I can't foster a child but there must be something we could do to help?

There are a few collection centres in Kent for Calais.

Would any other Kent mumsnetters be up for doing something? Donating stuff?

I don't see how. In fact those in calais are being supported by plenty of french charities and are doing fine. They can claim asylum in France which is a safe country. The ones who make it to France are the rich ones in any case. I would say any money you want to donate would be better going to red cross or the like to help the much poorer refugees living in squalid conditions just outside Syria becuase they couldn't afford the money needed to get to Europe. Or put pressure on your MP to get them to push for international pressure for a safe zone inside Syria where the poorest of the poor are stuck, starving to death when they aren't being tortured (inc children) or murdered, beyond the reach of any charity help. Sorry to be blunt and not meaning to upset but the ones in Calais are actually the luckiest - feel free to Google re conditions in Syria. Absolutely right to feel upset and angry tho, no child should suffer this.

I'd be keen to do something. I am just not sure what. There is a Kent refugee charity - kran.org.uk - maybe those mumsnetters from Kent who share our feelings / perspective could support them? I too can't get these images out of my head - I feel like I don't want to just stand by.
