Hi, I'm currently moving house within Brighton and considering hollingdean 'the dip' areas. I'm having trouble working out what schools my daughter would be likely to get into though. Does anyone live in this area and advise? Any help appreciated - thanks!!

Of course it depends exactly where you were living, but for places near to the Dip you would be mainly looking at Hertford Infants and then possibly Downs Infants and much less likely Balfour Primary. All are currently rated outstanding and were all oversubscribed this year.

Junior schools are Hertford or Downs. Hertford is undersubscribed and small, which is seen as a plus by parents (class sizes have been around 24) currently rated good. Downs is big and currently rated outstanding. One thing to bear in mind is that children in the linked Infants are given higher priority when applying for Juniors, which means that although there are some places for other children (e.g. those wanting to move from Hertford Infants to Downs Juniors), you do need to be living quite close to the school to get a place. Having said that, Balfour and Downs are large (4 form intake) so there is movement on waiting lists.

Hi Loopy, I would suggest you have a look on the admissions website. Somewhere there they have a list of last years admissions based on the priorities they use to give places. It will give you an idea of distance. Hertford infants is meant to be really lovely but I've not heard great things about the juniors. However, I think it has a new head so is improving. I sent my son to balfour as I live near the bottom of the woods so distance wasn't too far. However Downs my don would never have got into, as I think the largest distance was 0.7 or less of a km!!! They have a calculation thing on the website to calculate distance from an address! However distances will change each year depending on applications. X
