Help with Adoption prep in Milton Keynes

Hi all,

Apologies if this is not the right place to be asking about this as I am not technically a Mum yet! My husband and I are currently going through the adoption process and as part of my preparation as the primary carer the agency have asked me to gain more experience and spend more time with children between the ages of 3 - 6 years as we have a lot of experience with age 3 and below but not with older children. I am wondering what groups / clubs / centres there are in or near Milton Keynes in the evenings or on weekends where I could volunteer for this?

The brief is that it has to be situations where I am one of the people in control so family / friend get together's are not enough as essentially, as long as the parents are present the children will default to them as the ones in control. Baby sitting is ideal however I don't know anyone with children over 3 years old!

I'd be grateful to hear about anything from church Sunday school to brownies/cubs to charities who help families out and give a little respite. It doesn't matter what background the children are from or what the situation is, I just need an environment where I'm spending time with children in that age group and I'm responsible for them.

If anyone can help / suggest anything I'd be really grateful as I've been looking online and cant seem to find much that isn't in office hours.

The adoption agency are organising our DBS checks etc so that will all be in place in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks very much

Hi, not sure if this is much help but there's a magazine and website called Toddle About which advertises clubs etc for kids. Maybe you could contact some of them to see if you could help out? Also I know socatots have weekend sessions, maybe worth investigating.
Hope all goes well with the adoption process. I have a little boy of 16 months but will be looking into adopting a brother or sister for him sometime next year. I know from friends and family who have been through that it can be an arduous journey but obviously well worth it - good luck :) x
