Hello. Looking to move to Notts from Leamington and the two areas I have identified are Mapperley Park and West B. Could anyone pass opinions on the areas, how they differ, which they think is nicest etc ? Looking for a nice cafe culture feel, maybe a few shoos in surrounding area. I also want to feel safe. Thanks ????

Do you have, or anticipate, school age children?

We looked in both areas five years ago. A lot of the larger houses are quite similar and were the same price. But, in WB you're considered to be paying a premium for good schools, whereas in MP you are not and I suspect a lot of people go private. There aren't many smaller houses in MP.

MP is smaller, quieter, almost solely residential. There are nice shops and cafes nearby in Sherwood. WB has a lot of cafes - more by the day it seems!

It really depends on whether you have school age children. If you do, you then probably need to decide whether you want to go private or state. Private if you live in MP and state if you choose WB.

I grew up in WB and are moving back to Nottm from London and then 10 years overseas. We considered WB, MP and The Park. Ended up in The Park.

What follows is just from my research & experience, so obviously not everyone will agree:

WB is great. Great high street, tons of cafes and restaurants, lots of playgrounds, V safe. If you buy in WB you will pay a premium for the schools. You have to live in catchment area by January 15 to be able to get a chance at your 'neighborhood' school. So if you miss this date, you probably won't get into your school of choice because all the schools are way over subscribed. Check out Nottinghamshire County Council website for school info. However, all the WB schools are very good, either Outstanding or Good from Ofsted, same with the two secondary schools, so you can't go too wrong.

MP has a really nice housing stock and you are close to town. However, in MP there is nothing really there. There is a high street on Mansfield Road in Sherwood, some cafes/restaurants, so a nice community feel. But not like WB in terms of choice. However, Mansfield Rd is much more diverse, racially and socio-economically. There is a tennis club in MP if you play. With MP you have to be careful where you are. Closer to Woodborough Rd there is a red light district, and can get a bit sketchy the close you are.

From what you describe, I would go with WB.

Good luck with the move
