Rochester opinions - help!

Hi, I'm looking for some advice and opinions about Rochester. I currently live in Hackney in E London. I'm a 34 yo single mum to twins (11 months old). I've finally accepted that if we ever want to live anywhere bigger than a one bed flat, I'll have to leave London, so I'm thinking about Rochester. It appeals to me because it's close enough to London that for the time being I could commute to work & when I visited last week it seemed very pretty & people seemed friendly. Obviously we'd be able to live in a bigger place too. I've looked around on the net and there seems to be mixed opinions about it. At first I want to rent as I don't want to buy somewhere and end up hating it. What are people's views on good places to live? I need to be close to the train station, and ideally a park too. Has anyone else made this move? How have you found it? Is it easy to make new friends? Being a single mum, I'm worried I could move and end up with no friends at all! Any advice and opinions gratefully received!

Having lived in Rochester all of the 30 years I have been on this planet, I can say that is a nice place to live, it's got lots of history here, medieval and war history (chatham dockyard, Rochester castle etc) if you are into that thing.

Rochester high street has some lovely shops you can look in, museums and such, also twice a year there are festivals on called the Sweeps and Dickens festivals, which attracts alot of people in Medway which is pretty good to go to.

I would avoid Chatham/Gillingham though, they have both pretty a gritty place to live, many drug users/immigrants/misunderstood people live in those areas and some of it isn't pleasant.

Rochester has some lovely scenery though and it's definitely worth moving here in my honest opinion, Strood is also next door and has lots of shops, 6 supermarkets, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Icelands and Lidls, A Matalan B&Q, Poundland etc etc, Bowling center, Cinemas, Bingo.

Rochester train station runs straight through the middle and goes straight to London also.

There are a few parks around, one along the Esplanade next to Rochester bridge, so kids can see boats and stuff too :)

Lots of local bigger parks like Shawn Wood Country Park, Capstone Park etc.

So yeah.... go for it I say!

People are friendly here, but everywhere you go in this world there will always be a bad bunch.

I'll be happy to be your friend and show you around the place :)

P.S I've attached some images of Rochester for you to view.

lovablerascal - that was such a helpful post! Great photos of Rochester. I need to bring my son back to the castle this summer. He had lots of fun running around the grounds last time!

Hello poster, did you move to Rochester? I am in the same boat like you. I live in hackney in a one bed and we can't afford to buy in london. Went to see Milton Keynes yesterday and the whole place looks too quiet for my liking not even a corner shop unless u drive to the city center...
