Advice on primary schools in Chelmsford

Hello! We are moving to Essex from London in summer. Actually DH will be moving to Colchester in May and then we will follow during summer holidays. We went and had a look in Colchester. I also spoke to Hamilton primary which is rated the best primary in Colchester but they are heavily over subscribed. Our kids are aged 7 and 5 and go to an excellent CoE school in Bromley, Kent. I also went and had a look at Chelmsford. The scales are tipped in favour of Chelmsford because the grammar school KEGS is now catchment based and also proximity to London is another factor.
I have heard Tyrells and Perryfields are very good (in fact have a friend whose kids went to Perryfields and are now in both the grammar schools in Chelmsford). However in case these schools are over subscribed, are there any other schools equally good? As DH has to commute to Colchester General Hospital everyday, we can't be too far off in Chelmsford.
Are there any other schools in either of the Perryfields or Tyrells catchment area which are good? We are trying to figure out where to rent depending on schools obviously.
Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Hello OP! I'm probably not going to be much help as I don't have kids, but I do know the area very well! There are some wonderful villages in between Colchester and Chelmsford, namely Kelvedon and Coggleshall that I have always been told by locals are great for schools.

I'd personally avoid the area of Melbourne but other than that I've always been advised that Primary and Secondary in Chelmsford in general are of a very good standard.
