scared little boy

My 3.5 yo son has always been quite scared of new things, noises, me leaving the room. Lots of small things get him very upset. It's recently started to affect his previously excellent sleep as he wakes in the night and is scared to be alone. Is there some kind of expert I can talk to about this? I have mild anxiety issues and don't want him to end up like me! TIA

As someone with a child who is on the anxious side (my eldest, who is now 6), I sympathise. It never really affected her sleep, however.

My DD's anxieties were/are more about worrying about cars, dogs, putting hand up in class, performing in front of people, change in general, but we've been able to talk about things and reassure her as she's got older, and since she's started school she's really developed in confidence. Things like drama classes and after school clubs have also helped.

But your child is younger and obviously you want to get the sleep sorted, so I hope someone with experience, either as a parent or a professional, comes along to advise you soon. In the meantime, I just wanted to give you hope that even a child that is inherently anxious (I also had tendencies as a child/young adult) can learn the skills to become really confident and happy :)
