Renting a House

Hi ladies. Myself, husband and our three your children are moving from the West of Ireland to the Chichester area at the end of next month/beginning of April. I've a query about renting houses. Here it's very common to be able to rent direct from the landlord without going through agencies (and all the associated fees).. is this done ever in the UK?
I've been in Ireland 15 years and only gone back to UK visiting family/friends and realizing just how different it is.. Estate agents seem crazy with the fees…
Thanks in advance. Hubby and I are over and back over the next few weeks so really want to aim to find a home to land in.
We've been scouring Primelocation and Rightmove and seriously disheartened by how much it all seems to be..

I agree with you, the fees are crazy! A good place to check would be
www.friday-ad.co.uk/bognor-regis/property-rentals/for-rent/houses-for-rent-N-1z141g5 - also Gumtree sometimes have some good houses to rent. Occasionally in the past I have contacted holiday lettings companies and rented through them (always worth a go).

Thanks so much for the heads up !! Really appreciate it. Here we've a 5 bedroom house on an acre plus a small s/c granny flat in the garden DH uses for a music studio and rent is just over 600euro… seems like we'd badly rent a garage for that.. :-O

We are moving down to West Sussex in the Spring, currently living in the North West of England. Can anyone offer any advice about nice places to live near Gatwick, preferably a town. We have 2 boys aged 10 and 12 so would be looking to rent near to secondary schools in the area. Any advice would be gratefully received.
