The Leys for 13+?

We are looking at either Leys or Perse Upper for our all-rounder DS, but don't really have any up-to-date first hand feedback.

We are leaning towards Leys at the moment, as we are a bit concerned about how Perse Upper seems to be expanding and have had some negative feedback on the pastoral side. We really want a more 'personal' experience, great pastoral care, but also want DS to be stretched academically and encouraged to keep involved in music, drama, sport etc.

Are there any current mums out there with DC at the school or have friends there?

Hi Cim. I'm interested that you have children at both- not come across that before. Can I ask if that was down to what the children wanted, whether you thought it was a better fit, or something else?

I have taken on board what you said about the difference in the school day. What sort of time does your DC finish at the Leys?

Hi BusyBlue. Sorry for late reply. My eldest got places at both Perse and Leys and chose Perse. Second one didn't pass Perse exam, but always wanted to go to The Leys and loves it there. He is a day pupil but never gets home before 6pm (his choice as he loves what is offered at school, clubs, friends, music etc.). Let your child follow their instincts. Hope it helps.

Cim65. Thanks so much for taking the time to come back to me.I think my DS would pass the Perse entrance as he is bright across the board as well as sporty, but also into drama and music. He is very keen on the Leys, but I guess my creeping doubts are that Perse results seem better on paper.I guess that if they love the school they are more likely to be motivated and do well. You helped a lot :-)

Perse results seem better on paper because the entrance tests means they take more academic applicants. If your child is of a calibre to get straight A*'s he will be more than capable of getting them at the Leys - don't base his potential results on what the average student there gets, look at what they help the brightest students to get, and then go with the place he will be happiest

It has been a few years since this topic and I wonder if you would update me on the school you have chosen. My son is currently at Kings Ely and we would very much like to move him at the end of year 8 to either the Perse or the Leys.
