Moving to Edinburgh

Hi All,
I'm moving back to Edinburgh with my family after living down south for more than 20 years. For family reasons, we are very likely moving to Haymarket, or nearby. I know that area has changed a lot since I last lived in the city, and is still improving, but can anyone give me a feel for what living in Haymarket would be like? And please don't hold back. If the crime is bad, I want to know. If it's all transients and no community, let's hear it. However, if it belies its city-centre image and has a load of little local gems, that would be nice to know. Schools aren't an issue: we're going private as DD has special needs.

There are lots of new build apartments and town houses just off the top of Dalry road in Haymarket area as well as ther traditional tenement blocks. It is a mixed community of students, first time buyers, renting singles and couples and families of all ethnicities. There are a number of good neighbourhood restaurants and a variet of shops and small supermarket. Great bus connections as well as the tram and train station means it is easy to get around to any part of the city. It is not a posh area but not run down either- doesn't really have much of a community feel though if that is what you are looking for.

I'd actually find it really hard to pigeon hole Haymarket as an area - probably because it straddles a few different places; Dalry, edge of the West End, West Coates, then heading round towards Roseburn. Where are you looking?
