Hitherfield or Julian's primary school

So the time is nigh... and we need to make a decision over the next few weeks.

I really like Hitherfield based on the times I've been to look around. It has a good feel and I highly rate the Head. The 2012 results looked excellent but am a bit concerned that the 2013 results were not so good. I think we have a good shot at getting a place.

I'd always assumed we wouldn't get into Julian's but based on last year's distances / discussions with the school, it looks like it might be possible. I know it's reputation, and the results do appear better, but I don't know any parents who have children there so it feels like more of a shot in the dark.

It's such a huge decision (both for DD1 and will obviously impact DD2 in a couple of years), can anyone please help? Any parents of children at Hitherfield or Julian's that can comment? If you could get a place at either (and they were equally convenient, as they are for us), what order what you put them in?

Yep, but got the sense that their catchment area is going to shrink massively this year so we probably stand less of a chance. Can I ask if you have primary school age children / where they attend?

Hi we have DS in reception at Hitherfield. It is a lovely school on the up BUT has a strict weekly homework policy from day one as well as 2 reading books a week.
Consider how you feel about this.
Apparently they plan to build a swimming pool although I'm not sure where. Head is ace as is deputy head of reception.
Annoyingly all PTA and parental involvement is in working day so as we both work full time we don't feel as involved as would have hoped.
There are limited after school places so put your name down now.
Julian's is still in chaos apparently with the new site which had no ASC provision. May have changed.
It also has a weird 'safe walking route' distance rules.
I put H 2nd and Julians 4th as I'm west Dulwich and wanted to avoid Fenstanton.

I'm a bit late to this but wanted to add that I have two children at Hitherfield, both of whom are flying academically. We love it there. The catchment is more challenging than Julian's which could account for the 2013 attainment - in our experience the teachers are excellent at assessing how far to push each child. Great ethos and grounds are fantastic - they keep open for a few hours after school so families can socialise at the trim trail/nature area.

But aside from my obvious bias - I would say that in our experience, these schools are 6 of one, half a dozen of the other; so much depends on how your child gels with each particular teacher. Choose which ever school you think your children would be happiest. Good luck; it's a stressful time I know.

A bit late (given the date) but just to echo everything too many bananas says. My little girl started Hitherfield Reception last September and we couldn't possibly be happier with it. She's made good friends, loves her teachers and makes good use of the excellent facilities. I have a strong sense that what they offer is tailored to each child and my DD has really benefited from this - when I speak to her teacher and other staff I feel they really know her already. Very pleased. Anyway good luck with your choice!
